The Backwaters of Alleppey
The small town of Alleppey or the ‘Venice of the East’ as it likes to be known is the centre of Backwater tourism in Kerala.
Connected to the neighbouring Districts of Cochin to the North, Kollam to the South and Kottayam to the East, a Houseboat trip through the Backwaters of Alleppey still remains the most popular way to experience this lush and tropical landscape.
The sheer beauty of the Vembanad Lake with it’s expanse of narrow canals and stunning tropical scenery makes each and every trip unique. Escape to a world where transport is by bicycle or canoe and immerse yourself in the lush, emerald watery world of the backwaters. Float along riverbanks lined with abundant green palm and coconut trees, marvel at the verdant paddy fields and take in the natural beauty of the colourful waterlillies and lotus flowers. |

The unique eco-system has attracted a huge range of wonderful birdlife and you’ll be amazed by the number of Majestic Eagles and blue Kingfishers you’ll see along the way. Woodpeckers, Malabar Hornbills, Cormorants, Darters, Plovers and Brahmini Kites – colourful birdlife at its best.
One of the highlights of the trip and the reason you won’t get bored on a Backwater cruise is the access you’ll have into ordinary village life. Watch as women in brightly coloured saris’s wash their clothes in the lake and fisherman launch their nets. Enjoy the smiles and excited laughter of the children as they race with each other to keep up with the boat and wonder how that dugout canoe manages to keep itself afloat when it is overflowing with so many freshly picked coconuts! An interesting mix of Christian, Hindu and Muslim cultures, there are small Churches, Temples and Mosques dotted amongst the landscape and you may well hear the Call to Prayer, a Christian Hymn or a Hindu Chant along the way. It really is a fascinating insight into life on the Backwaters.
